From the Nominator
BYU Magazine articles reflect the faith-based character of Brigham Young University, its vibrant learning and research environment, and its highly successful community of lifelong learners. This article reflects both the spirit of the time in which it was published, following nationwide interest and attention to issues of race and equity, and institutional efforts to better understand the experience of minorities on a campus that is overwhelmingly White.
From the Judges
This was an unexpectedly poignant piece. The personal nature of it was refreshing, and well-connected to larger systemic issues. Good prose and good use of quotes.
