BU Today, Boston University’s Daily News Website
From the Nominator
BU Today is submitting three articles written and published in 2020 for consideration by judges. We believe these stories reflect both the breadth and depth of our reporting. One story explores the wrenching decisions BU’s international students had to make as a result of the COVID-19 amid a political climate that many of them found hostile; another is a feature on the groundbreaking work being conducted by BU’s Center for Stuttering Therapy that included an intimate look at the daily challenges those with the speech disorder face, and how the center has transformed their lives; and our third story asked writers (BU Today staff for the most part) to choose one word that best summed up their experience in quarantine, and to write a short, personal essay that expanded on that word.
From the Judges
A really good package of articles. The one-word emotional summary approach for “Quarantine Diaries” was a great entry point to COVID-19. It was poignant, deeply personal, offered a variety of voices, and was well edited. “Joe Biden's Stutter...” showed a keen sense of opportunism by taking advantage of popular news to inform a wider audience about a center on campus.
