Chapman Forward Magazine
From the Nominator
2020 was a year of rapid change and constant adaptation for Chapman University. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the university continued to prioritize the elevation of Chapman as a high-level research institution. In 2019, Chapman rose to R2 status in the Carnegie Classification, for “high research activity.” In 2020, research awards at Chapman totaled $19.6 million, a 39% increase from the previous year. Furthermore, new infrastructure allows Chapman faculty and students to conduct transformative research projects, and perform in world-class facilities.
The goal of Chapman Forward magazine is to convey the excellence and impact of the university’s research programs to leaders at peer institutions, funding agencies, business and industry groups, and others in the research community.
The publication was launched in 2018, and in this, Chapman Forward’s third issue, we tell stories of the university’s research response to the COVID-19 crisis, and provide insights from faculty experts. Also featured is interdisciplinary work to combat antibiotic resistance, as well as a food scientist’s research into fraudulent labeling of products, and a film studies’ scholar’s book on Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho.
Published by Chapman’s Strategic Marketing and Communications Office and the Office of Research and Creative Activity, Chapman Forward is dedicated to sharing news of discovery, scholarship, and creative activity highlighting the ways in which faculty and students are making a difference in our communities and in the world.
From the Judges
Well-thought-out, with relevant content and broad-based appeal. “Lessons of the Amazon” and “The Forgotten Pandemic” were both favorites for both photos and layout. Overall a very readable, informative publication.
