“The Forgotten Ones: Untold and Unseen Consequences of COVID-19”
From the Nominator
As the world faced a global pandemic, Western University was compelled to deliver a cover story for the fall 2020 issue of its award-winning alumni magazine (available in print and online) that shared insight and experiences of diverse faculty members from across disciplines, working toward a common goal: the fight against COVID-19. For “The Forgotten Ones: Untold and Unseen Consequences of COVID-19,” Alumni Gazette staff writer Jeff Renaud interviewed virologist Eric Arts, family demographer Kate Choi, and global education expert Prachi Srivastava together via Zoom to discuss important research initiatives under way at Western, including developing a COVID-19 vaccine, investigating the impact of the pandemic on racialized communities, and studying the effect of school closings on the world’s student population. The end result was a persuasive 2,000-word feature story that clarified complex issues of inequality faced by millions of “forgotten ones” around the world.
