Inspiring Intergenerational Dialogue: Class of 1970 Meets Class of 2020
From the Nominator
The virtual event “50 Years Later: Class of 1970 Meets Class of 2020” brought together two different generations to discuss their similarities and differences. This video and panel conversation met multiple needs of our alumni during a pandemic year. First, the event brought joy and connection to the 0-Year and 50-Year reunion classes during a year of isolation. Second, the conversation addressed issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion both with discussion topics but also with demonstrating understanding between generations of NYU alumni. Speaking to the difference in student diversity between 1970 and 2020 identified room for further dialogue and support. Third, the panel educated all attendees no matter their affiliation about the similarities and differences between life in 1970 and issues of today.
From the Civil Rights Movement to current Anti-Racism Protests, the Great Inflation to the Recession brought on by the Pandemic—50 years between such major times in history—yet the Classes of 1970 and 2020 share a similar experience of political unrest and job search challenges. This event began with a video sharing images and music with a similar message, setting the stage for a panel discussion on these deep topics. The Class of 1970 members shared their stories and optimism, while the Class of 2020 members shared their own more recent experiences. More than 200 alumni participated live, and hundreds more have watched the event recording.
From the Judges
Pivoting is the way of the world in 2020. This was a new idea of how to pivot reunions, while making the older generation feel worthwhile and as though they have something to impart to the younger generation, while at the same time allowing the younger generation to feel seen and realize that other generations have had to work through their own issues—and they aren't all unique to 2020.
