It's Not Easy Being Green: A DocumenTree
From the Nominator
What does it take to be the Stanford Tree? The university’s unofficial mascot is a beloved icon amongst alumni and students across generations, a fixture at Reunion Weekend and athletic events. But only a select few have occupied the role. We sent Stanford Magazine digital editor Summer Batte to don the foliage and take alumni through the experience.
We produced a long-form narrative video that saw Summer through the process of training with the 2019-2020 Stanford Tree, Caroline Kushel, and eventually performing live at a basketball game. The video provides rare and unique access to the cherished mascot, showcasing the rigorous nature of the role with humor and a slight irreverence that is a hallmark of the Tree and the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band.
The video was published across Stanford Alumni’s social media platforms in February 2020 and on Stanford Magazine’s website. We added interactive elements on GIPHY and a teaser reference in the March 2020 issue of Stanford Magazine.
From the Judges
This made us smile! It is a unique perspective from a beloved campus character. Stanford produced and provided engaging content to share over several social platforms. We look forward to seeing more behind-the-scenes mascot moments from other institutions.
