Jacaranda Society 2020 Thank you Jigsaw Puzzle
From the Nominator
Bequests form an important source of philanthropic income for the University. Bequestors are celebrated through the Jacaranda Society, a giving society for donors who have pledged a gift in their wills. It is named for the tree – which is iconic of the St Lucia campus – to symbolise what can bloom from a single seed. Each year, the University recognises this important group at the Jacaranda Society High Tea, an annual stewardship event held at the historic Customs House where donors can engage with UQ leadership, students and researchers and learn about UQ’s philanthropic impact.
However, the much-anticipated event was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were aware that this cohort of donors was experiencing increased social isolation and health vulnerability due to the pandemic, and subsequently sought an innovative way to ensure this group felt connected and appreciated despite the cancellation of their event.
Our solution was a high-quality jigsaw puzzle of the famous UQ Great Court with a Jacaranda tree in bloom, accompanied by a special cover letter from the Deputy Director, Planned Giving, to highlight the importance of members to UQ at this challenging time. The puzzle referenced the favourite activity of many during the 2020 lockdown, providing donors with an activity that represented their connection to UQ and fostered our engagement with this group in a warm and thoughtful way. Much positive feedback was received, and it was also noted there was a $5,130 uplift in donations following receipt of the puzzle.
From the Judges
This simple and thoughtful gift was perfect to give donors during COVID. The puzzle provided activity while in quarantine. We loved that the puzzle has a direct connection to the Jacaranda Society and the university. This demonstrated a strong understanding of the audience. It was a fun item, and a beautiful picture. This puzzle replaced their annual recognition tea, and was half the price.
