From the Nominator
In the spring 2020 issue of Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ magazine, the feature article explores the history of the land that the HWS campus now occupies, which was, prior to the arrival of Europeans, the provenance of the Seneca Nation. The centerpiece of the issue’s “foundations” theme, the article reflects on the Senecas’ historical use of the land, the role that colonialism played in the formation of HWS, and the ways the institution has been reckoning with its past. The piece grew out of ongoing campus conversations—among student groups, faculty, and administrators—about the colleges’ history and traditions vis a vis Indigenous communities.
From the Judges
Very straightforward piece. Good editing keeps this story moving along and on point.
