“Out of Action, Comes Hope”
From the Nominator
Last summer, in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, millions took to the streets across North America to protest police brutality against Black Americans and Canadians, and to promote social justice. Within days of the protests, U of T’s anti-racism and cultural diversity office had held events for staff to discuss what had happened. Within weeks, the university had created a task force on anti-Black racism and hosted a national dialogue on the subject, with participants from universities and colleges across Canada. With the feature article, “Out of Action, Comes Hope,” we aimed to explain to alumni how the university sought to address systemic racism and promote Black inclusion across its three campuses, while also making clear why these efforts are needed.
From the Judges
Good use of the author's personal experiences to humanize what is a societal and systemic issue. It was an ambitious work, and largely delivers on a touchy and timely subject.
