“Path to a Vaccine”
From the Nominator
"Path to a Vaccine" highlighted the work of three URI colleges and four faculty experts in the fields of immunity and pathogenesis of viral diseases, supply chain management, and pharmacy as it traced the path of a vaccine’s progress from petri dish to neighborhood pharmacy. A web story featured in the URI homepage hero space in late November 2020, it offered information helpful to our broadest audience to better understand vaccine development and distribution at a time when the public's interest in and confusion around the vaccine was growing.
This piece featured links to four URI programs for prospective students—our primary audience— who may be interested in learning more about these programs, and photographs of masked faculty modeling CDC guidelines for infection prevention. Finally, it demonstrated how directly URI is involved in the state’s COVID-19 vaccination plan. One expert featured is on a panel advising the governor’s office on vaccine safety and efficacy. Another will supervise URI student pharmacists in coronavirus inoculation as she has in other targeted public health initiatives around diabetes, meningitis, HPV, and shingles vaccination.
From the Judges
Good prose and timely subject. Mostly delivered on a very ambitious goal.
