“Permission To Laugh”
From the Nominator
BYU Magazine articles reflect the faith-based character of the university, its vibrant learning and research environment, and its highly successful community of lifelong learners.
This article got readers laughing and crying with a beloved alumni couple—Chris and Lisa Clark—as they faced his ALS diagnosis with humor and bravery. We didn’t realize it at the time, but Chris passed away just a week after photography for the article was completed, so it was especially poignant for the magazine team and readers.
From the Judges
One of our judges said, “This had me with the great first line: ‘Things get weird fast on Show Offs.’ It’s catchy, and foreshadows the tone of the piece, which also gets weird fast.” Another said, “This reads like the writer has a lump in her throat the whole time, and that seems just right for this piece.” This is such a tough story to report, and the writer captured this exceedingly sad story that has such heart, and showcases humor as a coping mechanism and a part of the profile subject that is permanent, no matter what else is lost.
