“Plant Science in a New Light”
From the Nominator
Michigan State University’s University Communications team is constantly looking for creative ways to tell research stories that resonate with its broad general audience. A recent story brings readers along for a behind-the-scenes look at the dedication and drive of Spartan researchers, and what it takes to be one of the world’s leading plant science programs.
The content reveals how Spartans are upgrading their greenhouse facilities on campus with light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, to save energy and money, as well as accelerate plant and agricultural research. But this is more than a run-of-the-mill research story, which is immediately evident when you see the first of several striking photographs of MSU’s greenhouses that now glow pink. These photos draw readers in and invite them to learn about the scientific and economic benefits of the lights—benefits that MSU is working to share with Michigan growers. The story also captures the dedication and teamwork it takes to do groundbreaking research sustainably.
