The Tipping Point on Criminal Justice Reform
From the Nominator
Our fall 2020 UVA Lawyer magazine cover story was about “The Tipping Point” on criminal justice reform. In the story, we chronicle the year's pivotal moment in criminal justice through an extensive feature showcasing the expertise, ideas, and passion of our professors and alumni in working to solve systemic criminal justice problems. We needed illustrations to pull all the elements together.
From the Judges
The sensitivity and complexity of the subject matter of this submission is exceptionally well-captured by many of the illustrations within, particularly the more metaphorical pieces, including the chalk outline hanging over the depiction of a police officer, the bird singing a key into existence, and the shadowy and invasive (and wonderfully creepy) arms wrapped around a suspect. The overall impact of the written piece is heightened by the limited but bold color palette and these exceptional editorial illustrations.
