The Virus That Changed the World
From the Nominator
The challenge for this cover design was in anticipating the pandemic. Pausing our originally planned alumni photo cover, we needed a powerful image about COVID-19 that would be able to anticipate the mood of the pandemic at the same time that we were just learning about it. We worked with illustrator Melinda Beck to create an iconic image of the virus’ effect on the world, something that would be relatable and powerful.
From the Judges
This cover says so much so simply. It’s attention-getting, poignant and evocative, bold and graphically beautiful. As one judge said, “The hands feel as if they have just broken apart—or are they reaching for each other?” We loved the choice to make the virus tiny, and we thought the color choices were stunning.
