Voices for Equity and Justice
From the Nominator
"Voices for Equity and Justice" was a major feature package in the Fall/Winter 2020 issue of Emory Magazine (published in November 2020). The many months of racial protest and social unrest in America—sparked by the unjust killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and other Black men, women, and children—were fueled by both righteous anger and resolute hope. In the following pages, some of Emory’s top Black leaders—teachers, researchers, creators, students, alumni—share their perspectives on the impact this reinvigorated movement has had on their personal and professional lives. Through their words, they shed light on how we as a society and as a university community can move toward a future where equity and justice burn brightly, and where systemic racism has been extinguished.
From the Judges
We were moved by the number of publications that submitted stories on racial justice this year, and we hope it’s a trend that quickly becomes the norm. We liked Emory’s clarity of focus and intentional approach. As one judge remarked, “It was smart to draw on experts and let them speak.” The varying story lengths and mediums (the poem “Bullet Points” was a beautiful addition), and the straightforward format and appealing photography made the impact even stronger.
