Boston University CFA Magazine Spring 2021 and Fall 2021
From the Nominator
"CFA magazine's overarching goal is to capture the spirit and energy of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts’ artistic and creative community of visual artists, performers, and musicians. The alumni magazine aims to reflect that community with bold designs and a nontraditional approach to fonts and color.
The magazine expresses our place on the leading edge of modern design. Our concept is to treat the publication more as a coffee-table arts magazine versus a typical alumni publication. The result is a highly visual and colorful design with an emphasis on large images and modern, playful typography. Photography is purposely bright, colorful, and sharp, often playing with lighting for artistic effect. Black graphics are incorporated to offset the bright colors everywhere else. The high contrast is carried through to the masthead.
Every issue of CFA contains a number of feature stories with visuals that are under consideration for potential covers. The art director usually designs at least three potential covers for the client to choose from. The selection is often based on which one they feel is the most attractive, but consideration is also given to any marketing messages or themes they want to promote with a particular issue."
From the Judges
Publications have become our new best friends. Boston University's CFA Magazine has a conceptual structure that captures and illuminates the editorial content of the story. Bold, modern design. Great color throughout. We love the masthead and oversized headlines. Each spread looks different, but the style is consistent throughout.
