Caltech Magazine 2021
From the Nominator
"Caltech magazine encompasses the people, research, and innovation that are all hallmarks of Caltech as a world-leading science and engineering institute. In 2021, under the direction of editor-in-chief Lori Oliwenstein, art director Jenny Somerville, and managing editor Sharon Kaplan, Caltech magazine captured the essence and resilience of the Institute through smart, relevant, and compelling stories about its people and its scientific impact, while strengthening the connection between Caltech and its friends and supporters. The magazine content aims to strike a tone that is innovative, curious, clever, and fun while being both challenging and approachable. The design strives be all this as well as clean, modern, and sophisticated.
In 2021, amid all the year's challenges, Caltech magazine produced issues that went above and beyond—in content and design—tackling stories on groundbreaking science, digging deep into philosophical questions about the nature of research, and pushing the limits of its publication, both literally and figurative, to unite the campus community that had to this point spent a great deal of time apart."
From the Judges
The Spring issue with the field journal and the comic style story is very creative. The illustrations are very impressive and is where this publication shines. Great expression of diversity. Really love the covers, the illustrations, the angles for the articles, etc. Excellent work.
