The Campaign to End the Pandemic
From the Nominator
"UNICEF was entrusted by the Global Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) to lead the COVID-19 vaccine distribution program in 92 countries, tasked to ensure delivery of 2 billion doses in 2021 to more than 180 countries. It is the largest and fastest global vaccination program in history, watched by the whole world—and it comes on top of UNICEF’s regular work to get children back on track after devastating setbacks in essential services. It was a year of “and also,” not “instead of.” It is the biggest single undertaking in UNICEF’s 75-year history. It is a historic, complex, and difficult task.
It was clear even in the beginning that UNICEF would play an outsized role in ending the pandemic, and UNICEF USA was privileged to play our part. UNICEF USA launched the Campaign to End the Pandemic to answer the world’s call, fueling UNICEF’s $933 million appeal to implement the vaccination and health system strengthening program. UNICEF alone was uniquely made for this moment. No other humanitarian organization can do what we are doing for the world.
To date, the campaign has raised over $262 million, fueling UNICEF’s efforts to ship 1.19 billion vaccines and 650 million items of personal protective equipment to 144 countries. We mobilized long-time donors and focused on donor acquisition (55% of campaign donors were first-time donors!) at the mass market and principal gift level. Collectively, UNICEF and its supporters are turning vaccines into vaccinations."
