The Chinese Lady Poster
From the Nominator
"The Lewis Center for the Arts puts the arts at the heart of the Princeton University experience. For their senior thesis, students in the theater program have the opportunity to write, direct, act, design, compose, or stage-manage projects under the guidance of visiting artists and our professional faculty and staff.
One of these productions is The Chinese Lady, a show that centers on Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman in America. The show follows her through the 19th century as she tours around America as a museum exhibit, presenting her culture through bound feet and tea-drinking for American citizens to enjoy.
Working closely with the thesis student, I developed various poster concepts, landing on the nominated poster. The overall idea was to reflect the heritage of the play's subject in a clear, contemporary way and eschew stereotypes. The poster was impactful in drawing a diverse, engaged audience including artists, professors, and community members."
From the Judges
Visually striking poster. Anyone would stop and stare. Beautiful color palette.
