"Leadership—in research, education, and practice—was the focus of the Coloradan alumni magazine’s summer 2021 issue. Its stories delved into the ways leadership can change for the betterment of today’s world, as well as CU Boulder’s role in shaping a new generation of leaders.
In order to bring a compelling look to a broad topic, artist James Yang was commissioned to illustrate the issue’s cover and the main six-page feature. Yang’s award-winning work has been featured in such news outlets as Newsweek, The New York Times, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal. The result was a bright, reflective, and hopeful look that immediately caught readers’ attention."

The illustration style is interesting and the color palette is lovely. Judges especially liked that the illustrations were more creative and less literal than typical alumni magazine fare.
