"Fighting Poverty With Cash"
From the Nominator
"While many people may have heard about the basic income experiment that took place in Stockton, California, fewer likely realized an assistant professor on the other side of the country led the study. In the May-June 2021 issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette, Associate Editor Dave Zeitlin introduces readers to that Penn professor, Amy Castro Baker. She shares how she got involved in the country’s biggest income experiment in decades, the extreme backlash she received, and her role in promoting guaranteed income in cities across the country with a new center at the university. Through a long sit-down interview with her and several close colleagues, Castro Baker’s own childhood and journey to academia are also explored, along with a historical look at citizens receiving a basic income and the promising initial results of the Stockton study."
