Georgia Magazine
From the Nominator
"Georgia Magazine is the flagship print publication of the University of Georgia, the largest university in the state and birthplace of public higher education in America. With four issues per year—twice as many as any other UGA magazine—and a distribution of approximately 150,000, Georgia Magazine has the widest circulation of any UGA publication. This makes the magazine a powerful tool in helping the university deliver its messages to constituents.
It also means that Georgia Magazine has a greater responsibility in telling its stories as skillfully as possible. The 150,000 people who receive Georgia Magazine each quarter include alumni, faculty, administrators, parents, donors, state legislators, and other constituents. The magazine is also available across campus for free.
The review period of July 2020-December 2021 included several notable accomplishments. On August 15, 2020, Georgia Magazine celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding, and the Winter 2020 issue included as its cover story an overview of the Georgia Magazine century. Our cover idea—a collage of covers from the past—was shared with the magazine at Texas A&M, which incorporated the design into its 75th anniversary issue.
The review period also marked a return to in-person work, though many of our meetings and interviews remained virtual. Still, the freedom to travel resulted in strong work such as “Well Crafted,” our feature on eight alumni-owned or -managed craft breweries in Georgia. We were able to visit all of them, a personal touch that is easily seen in the story’s compelling visuals."
From the Judges
Engaging covers and a nice mix of photography, particularly from the fieldwork since that's not always easily available. Solid design and branding throughout. The plastics story was clean and broad, the microbrew layouts and graphics were well done, and the human trafficking piece was ambitious with a clear connection to the university. Creative use of student contributors and interesting mix of stories!
