The Lawrentian
From the Nominator
"The Lawrentian is the magazine of The Lawrenceville School, an independent school for grades 9-12 in New Jersey. We publish four times a year, sending it to some 13,000 alumni. In every issue, we aim to keep our alumni informed about the Lawrenceville of today, stirred by sepia-toned memories of Lawrenceville's past and inspired by other members of our school community.
The Lawrentian keeps readers from ages 18-98 connected to their school through engaging profiles and features, as well as regular departments such as "Ask the Archivist," which explores aspects of Lawrenceville's 212-year past; "Take This Job and Love It," which highlights alums working in unique, emerging, or even quirky careers; a robust Class Notes section bursting with photos and updates; or the use of colorful, full-spread photography in "A Thousand Words."
Features sometimes reflect events shaping the campus, too. When Black students and alumni had criticisms for Lawrenceville in summer 2020, the school was responsive to those cries in many ways. One change was to retire terms such as "head master." Many alumni objected to the loss of a time-honored tradition. In turn, we related the story of an alum who also was tasked with overseeing the retirement of a cherished brand name as the general manager of the 113-year-old New Orleans brewery. The subtle takeaway was the shift in language improved their business, the company moved forward, and the change has been largely forgotten--much like it has now at Lawrenceville."
