This editor's note served as a short companion piece to our lengthy "125 Wingate Difference-Makers" feature that celebrated the 125th anniversary of Wingate University's founding. The commentary was designed to shed a little more light on why the university (or school, as it was originally) has been such a vital part of the community for so many years and to put the rest of the issue in perspective.
From the Judges
This submission was fun and engaging. We liked the use of humor as a device to make a broader point. The use of a lighter tone in a piece about a school’s history was surprising and effective, and challenged the dry, inward-looking traditional approach that we as institutions often take in writing about our history.
