Milton Magazine
From the Nominator
"Building resilience and strengthening the bonds of community were key priorities for Milton Academy in 2021 as the school met the dual challenges of teaching K-12 students during the ongoing pandemic and forging connections across distance and difference. The themes selected for Milton Magazine reflected those challenges. Looking to the future in the spring issue, the magazine highlights alumni and students eager to solve generation-defining problems. Then, in the fall issue, food—its cultural importance, accessibility, sourcing, and ability to gather us together—took center stage.
The spring issue, “A Generation Looks Ahead,” introduces Milton graduates challenging the status quo in the fields of education, climate science, comedy as social commentary, mental health, and technology. Meanwhile, members of the Class of 2021 shared their passion for advocacy. The school’s performing arts department was highlighted for its herculean efforts to maintain a robust program throughout remote learning and social distancing.
In the fall, “The Food Issue” uses a universal necessity—eating—as an anchor for stories about the ways in which Milton people connect across generations, cultures, and their care for the planet and one another. The issue tells the stories of alumni chefs, farmers, advocates, and a food influencer—people whose passion for food extends beyond flavor and spice. On campus, Milton teachers and students learn and grow through food."
From the Judges
Beautifully designed piece that includes high-quality photography and illustration, as well as smart use of white space. This magazine has an elegant and mature feel and goes way beyond covering school news. Instead, the editors connect Milton and its alumni with issues relevant to all, making the stories feel like they have a wider, more general audience. The Food Issue was especially well-done, with inviting stories and stellar design.
