Native American Heritage Month: Mahlea Hunt (‘23)
From the Nominator
"Wake Forest University student Mahlea Hunt (‘23), a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe, designed a Wake Forest-themed regalia dress to be worn during traditional Native American dances and ceremonies. During Native American Heritage Month, the social media team created a one-minute video showcasing Mahlea’s culture, heritage, and beautiful regalia dress. The video is part of an ongoing series to introduce the wider campus community to its diverse members.
With more than 280,000 views across social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube), this video is Wake Forest’s most viewed video in its history. The video had a potential reach of more than 715,000 and it earned 23,300 reactions, 1,099 comments, and 1,777 shares. It still receives views, comments, likes, and shares daily.
The social media team connected with Mahlea to request permission to conduct an on-camera interview and b-roll video shoot of the regalia. She chose the picturesque Reynolda Village Trail on campus--the perfect location for this video shoot. At the time of filming, the videographer met with her to discuss the overall goals of the video, desired outcome, and method for shooting the video. The videographer and Mahlea also discussed an overall theme, and she created her own script to ensure she was authentically telling her story. Mahlea was involved throughout the process (from pre-production to post), making this collaboration a truly authentic experience."
