Pandemic Portraits
From the Nominator
"The university wanted to recognize the essential workers who made a significant impact. Assistant Director of Photography Jay Drowns collaborated with campus leaders to identify and photograph those who went above and beyond their job description to serve the campus community.
There were unique work situations for each subject due to health protocols. The photographer had limited time with each subject. This led to the use of the same camera, lens, and light for each shoot. The intent was to use similar lighting, shallow depth of field, and framing to create a congruent look and feel to each image while allowing each unique environment to lend to the visual narrative of the individual."
From the Judges
Something that stands out with this series of images is that they were highly successful in branding the images as uniquely UVU by carrying campus colors throughout the series in both subtle nods and intentional means. The execution and vision for the voice of this photo series was well-planned and executed. From top to bottom, they hit all of the marks necessary to elevate their work from 'everyday' to 'uniquely UVU.'
