Queen's Alumni Review
From the Nominator
"Our greatest achievement this year was overhauling the Queen’s Alumni Review from top to bottom. This was no small task and had to be handled with care. The magazine has been a beloved publication at the university since 1927. But it was in desperate need of change and a new look to complement our new editorial mandate.
We were on a mission to not only update the magazine's design, but reinvent it. Our team's goal was to show where Queen’s has come from, but also where it is going—making it lively and contemporary, and engaging readers both emotionally and intellectually. The new design offers more visual content and a variety of story formats to better represent the innovative future of the university and the diversity of the Queen’s community.
Utilizing a variety of tools and textures, such as much larger photographs, a moveable banner, multiple editorial entry points, a removable border, and small, detailed type, we leaned heavily on a black-and-white colour palette and one or two accent colours to allow our content to shine through. Using strategic pacing with a variety of story formats and visual content, the new magazine’s style engages readers from the cover right through to the last page.
Throughout the book, short stats, facts, and infographics add texture, context, and levity where needed. The visual aesthetic is sophisticated and arresting with sprawling stories, large environmental portraits and documentary photography, vast amounts of white space, and thoughtful design."
