Re:D - Magazine of Parsons School of Design, Fall 2021
From the Nominator
"For many years, Re:D (Regarding Design) has been the annual alumni magazine of Parsons School of Design at The New School. However, for the 2021-22 academic year issue, we evolved the publication to appeal to a broader audience interested in innovative design and the future of design education. This includes alumni, but also prospective students and their parents, industry partners, employers, and donors, and even current faculty and students.
Our goal was to engage readers with an inspiring narrative that reaffirms the value of a design education and Parsons’ role in leading-edge, inclusive, equitable, sustainable solutions to pressing challenges. In this year's issue, the focus was on health and wellness, an area of heightened public attention in the wake of a global pandemic. Additionally, having an exquisitely designed publication showcasing the success stories of our alumni, students, and faculty enabled the piece to support in-person student recruitment efforts in a year when the university did not produce a traditional prospect viewbook about Parsons (only a broader viewbook about academic offerings throughout The New School).
The "Health and Wellness for All" issue of Re:D, printed in September 2021, tells a cohesive story about how Parsons contributes to urgent real-world issues (in this case, global health and well-being) in a way readers hadn't fully appreciated on the website or in digital media. 4,600 copies were mailed to alumni, with the remainder distributed to prospective applicants in the campus Welcome Center and used by college and university leadership and faculty during in-person interactions."
From the Judges
The Re:D – Magazine of Parsons School of Design, Fall 2021 was excellent and stood out. The publication could be considered a staple for the dining or living room table. Really good and consistent design. One judge remarked “The relationship between design and wellness was a compelling choice of theme. The cover has so much emotion, it brought tears to my eyes.”
