In 2021, we were humbled by the challenges our community faced together. This issue reflects how we rose to these challenges—while navigating the many personal complications the pandemic brought to all of our lives—by honoring the theme of "Strength." We’ve been inspired and determined. At times, we’ve been exhausted and (re)discovered the benefits of rest. We’ve found new levels of honesty and advocacy with one another, deepening our collaborations to discover brave new ways of creating, working, and being. Throughout the difficulties, our community came together and found courage in one another. We’ve emerged stronger.
This issue of Emergence showcases some of our discoveries made during the 2020–21 academic year that brought us strength and will continue to serve us well post-pandemic. It honors our dexterity and the ways that our community of artists and designers activated our values, skills, and creativity in service of a better tomorrow.
