Tableau Tour: A Sightseeing Adventure

"Having the latest and greatest technology for your team is awesome, but such tools are only maximized when staff feel empowered to fully use them. In conjunction with the 2021 Tableau Server Upgrade, Caltech launched an internal marketing campaign and training event for our Tableau site.
Over the course of 10 days, “Bucky and Kelly’s Tableau Tour” showcased tips and tricks for getting the most value from our reporting platform. It creatively positioned the training as a fun sightseeing adventure, with Caltech mascot Bucky Beaver and our senior data analyst as tour guides. The effort included fun teaser images, brief video Tableau tips, and trip quests (participation activities) that could result in raffle prizes--Caltech swag! Within this fun context, staff learned how to use the upgraded site, renewed their enthusiasm for data informed decision making, and provided useful feedback for dashboard developers."
From the Judges
This was a really creative approach to learning a new system. Who knew the rollout of the upgrade of a data visualization tool could be so much fun?! We applaud the atypical rollout and see it as an opportunity for other institutions to model.
