TREK magazine
From the Nominator
"TREK magazine is for all UBC alumni. Its mission is to draw a positive response from readers that translates into a deeper connection with the university.
In 2019, TREK underwent a substantial review of its editorial approach and design. One of the outcomes was a switch to themed issues. This was, in part, a revenue strategy. The themes (which are continued online for six months and supplemented by alumni programming) are meant to attract related sponsorship for the magazine in an effort to make it more financially sustainable.
That said, TREK primarily serves the (researched) needs and interests of our alumni audience. One of the ways it does that is by showcasing research, expertise, or innovation that can advance healthy lives, healthy societies, and a healthy planet--a strategy that aligns with our institutional priorities.
The theme for the submitted spring 2021 issue “Frontiers of Medicine” focused on healthy lives. It was chosen in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the outsized contributions that UBC researchers have made in the quest for vaccines (covered online) and search for antibodies (covered in print), but also to the field of medicine in general. Our business development colleague was able to find a sponsor, and we filled the issue with content about cutting-edge research that is leading change. It was intriguing, optimistic, and relevant content (honing in on COVID and common diseases and conditions) that was enlivened by a bold design approach."
From the Judges
This submission made us feel like we were walking through an art gallery. There are many aspects of this publication with other universities could learn from. They made some bold moves that really worked.
