UC Advocacy Network Webinar: An Election Like No Other
From the Nominator
"In 2020, the University of California (UC) launched a system-wide, nonpartisan get-out-the-vote campaign. The UC Advocacy Network (UCAN), a digital community of more than 41,000 advocates who advance UC’s state and federal priorities, played a key role in driving activity.
Two weeks before the California voter registration deadline, UCAN hosted its first-ever webinar, “An election like no other: Getting Californians ready for November.” The online conversation and audience Q&A was led by high-profile UC faculty and alumni: UC Irvine election law expert Rick Hansen, then-Chief Deputy Secretary of State James Schwab, and moderator Jen Tolentino, the deputy director for the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office. Their conversation delved into the historic nature of holding an election during a pandemic and how public officials were addressing questions about confidence in the electoral process. The event fostered active engagement throughout the session via pre-submitted questions and the webinar Q&A function.
The webinar was viewed nearly 800 times, surpassing our goal of 250 viewers. A follow-up survey found that 99% of participants rated the event favorably and reported that they walked away with greater clarity on how to safely exercise their right to vote. In addition, nearly 150 attendees took the additional step of joining UC’s Advocacy Network and agreeing to advocate on UC’s behalf. The webinar also highlighted UC’s role as a thought leader whose faculty and alumni shape policies and programs with statewide and national impact."
