UMass Magazine - Publication Design
From the Nominator
"One of UMass Magazine's goals is to keep our community informed of current happenings on campus. With only two issues per year, a long production cycle, and ever-changing COVID-19 protocols, we were challenged to portray the current moment because it was shifting so rapidly.
Our design team at BRIGADE used photo treatments to enliven on-campus photos taken at required distances ("Retaking the Stage," summer 2021 issue). We commissioned photo illustrations centered on video stills from Zoom interviews ("The One Constant," fall 2021 issue). We highlighted gems from archival collections ("Black Women, Visible and Heard," summer 2021 issue). We commissioned fresh illustration to iterate concepts ("Money Matters," fall 2021 issue)."
From the Judges
The design feels very modern and clean. Great use of color, photography, and illustration. I especially like the skillful use of illustration to stylize photos into a cohesive series of spreads. The covers are great. Very creative throughout. A. May Choco-a-block with full-bleed photos, layered images, and shifting type columns, the layout exposes an unmitigated view of the stories.
