The trick here was to not just encapsulate the incredible life that National Geographic reporter and photographer Scott Wallace has led, but also to demonstrate how he translates that life experience into lessons that inform and inspire our UConn students to follow in his footsteps—perhaps not to the most remote Amazonian jungles, but to the highest journalistic standards. Using instructive quotes to organize the many aspects of Wallace's life experience was a device that added color and underscored the professorial piece of the portrait.

This was a well-researched, beautifully written, and creatively structured story of a fascinating person. The judges particularly applaud the pacing of the story, the creative use of subheads and captions, and clever turns of phrase. Masterfully done!
