Wildcat Reads
From the Nominator
"The Wildcat Reads program was created to establish a connection between our constituents during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, all of our in-person programs were unavailable and many schools and childcare programs were shuttered. The goal of the Wildcat Reads program was to highlight books affiliated with our university and provide entertainment and a connection for parents, grandparents, young children, and all interested constituents.
The alumni association staff selected relevant books, along with notable hosts to read the book. The hosts included a beloved former Hall of Fame football coach and our dean of the college of education, who both authored their books. The readings were recorded and aired utilizing Facebook Live as well as YouTube.
The results of our efforts were very successful. With more than 15,000 views and interactions on Facebook and YouTube, the alumni association was able to connect with people and provide them with entertainment and joy in a time when that was the most valuable thing our constituents needed."
From the Judges
The Wildcat Reads program made us say “Wow, what a great idea!” It is an engaging—yet simple—initiative that leverages others as volunteers and provides an interesting service for Kansas State alumni and their families. This is a good model that can easily be adopted by other schools.
