The Belonging Conference
From the Nominator
"The Division of Development and Alumni Relations created a one-day conference to bring together advancement professionals to explore and share best diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices; discuss and communicate successes and case studies; and create a local network of professionals who will continue this important conversation after the conference's conclusion.
The genesis of this conference was a desire to learn more about how DEIB initiatives and issues are playing out in the advancement profession. The intent was to encompass as many aspects of DEIB work as was feasible in one day, and we wanted the notion of "belonging" to permeate the participants' experience—hence the conference's name.
This conference also had the purpose of advancing the advancement profession by including a diversity of people, thoughts, and experiences. Johns Hopkins' Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion articulates the institution’s commitment to the equal dignity and worth of all persons. This commitment requires the institution to cultivate an environment that allows community members to feel valued, engaged, and empowered to succeed. Hosting a conference designed to share and discuss a multiplicity of ideas and experiences aligns with this commitment.
More than 180 people attended from over 32 educational institutions. Eighty-six percent of participants reported that they were "extremely satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the event, and 106 Johns Hopkins employees viewed the participation of development and alumni relations leadership as positive evidence of their commitment to DEIB work."
From the Judges
The panel felt this was a strong execution of a tried-and-true idea. They cited, in particular, the inclusion of nonprofit organizations, the creation of a new network within the industry, and the effort toward building a common language as benefits of your program. Judges agreed this is an important topic to explore and elevate within the advancement community. Your smart use of resources makes this easily replicable at an institution of any size.
