The California Studio: Donor Thank-You Message
From the Nominator
"The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies are dedicated to the practice of art in a teaching and research environment. Located in the Department of Art and Art History at UC Davis College of Letters and Science, the program inspires experimentation and innovation through exchange with leading contemporary artists.
This program has been funded exclusively by Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem, whose support of visual arts education at UC Davis is multifaceted. Most recently, inspired by a vision of igniting an arts renaissance at UC Davis, they established The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies in the Departments of Art and Art History. These programs and institutions enrich student and campus life by expanding access to art, its histories and the living artists who continue to create and innovate.
Working collaboratively with the program, arts departments, students, staff, and faculty, we filmed interviews and interactions, and wrote a narrative to tell the story of a philanthropic investment that will impact our university, college, and arts world for generations.
Although the primary purpose of the piece is to directly thank the highly generous donors, it also serves as a legacy piece and potential inspiration for what philanthropy can accomplish. Upon receiving the piece, the donors were delighted, and immediately renewed their support for another three years (a pledge of $750k). Furthermore, it is being leveraged by the university chancellor and development as collateral in a 2023 $30M+ ask, of which part will endow this program."
