The Godmother of Title IX
From the Nominator
"Motivated by repeated rejections in her job search—including from UMD after completing her doctorate—Bernice Sandler ’69, who has a doctorate in education, became “The Godmother of Title IX.” She launched a battle that spanned classrooms, Congress, and national stages to create, pass, and defend—for decades—the groundbreaking federal legislation that opened the door for millions of women to achieve educational, athletic, and professional equality.
The original art that accompanies the story is a series of archival images, custom collages, and line art that highlights Sandler as well as some of Maryland’s greatest female student-athletes of the past 50 years."
