The topic of suicide prevention presented an interesting challenge. We needed the illustration to be sensitive and thoughtful. Working with illustrator Monica Garwood, we were able to translate the idea of "drowning inside your own thoughts" in an accessible way. The article became one of the top five read articles online in 2022.
From the Judges
The design's immediate and powerful communication of its topic was lauded, and the choice of subdued tones helped to convey its seriousness. The use of blue was noted as particularly helpful in illustrating the varying depths of water against lighter colors on land. Overall, the judges agreed that this design was impactful and expertly executed.
