Terp Magazine
From the Nominator
"Terp magazine connects the University of Maryland community, celebrating its people and their impact through compelling and ambitious storytelling, arresting photography, thoughtful illustrations, and sophisticated design.
The magazine informs and entertains through a UMD lens, covering timely topics including racial inequity, climate change, national political strife, fascinating profiles, interesting campus news, and fun takes on Terp life. These two issues showcase that balance. Outstanding design examples include the cover image showing a student splashing in the UMD fountain en route to finishing her campus bucket list; a clean and bright infographic guide to the new IDEA Factory; and a comparison of historic and new photos with amusing captions to depict the dramatic changes underway in our college town. Exceptional articles include a unique look at research on immigration shifts in a former coal-mining town by a writer whose immigrant great-grandfather died in one of those mines, and a colorful take on the century-long destruction of the Chesapeake’s oyster beds (blame pirates!) and how UMD robotics researchers are trying to resuscitate them.
The magazine is mailed three times a year to 109,000 homes, but the content extends much further via a companion website, the University's daily news site, and social media. A 2022 Alumni Association survey found that Terp is the second most popular way alums stay connected with UMD."
From the Judges
The creative design around everyday happenings visually brings you back to campus. It has a good mix of stories and is among one of the easiest magazines to page through. It’s an accurate reflection of the university in its representation of the student body and campus happenings. This magazine is fun to read.
