T&R Learning Circle
From the Nominator
"Capilano University is committed to decolonization and the continued act of Truth and Reconciliation through the following:
• Implementing an action plan to integrate diverse initiatives and efforts to indigenize and decolonize education and campuses at Capilano University.
• Deepening relationships to co-develop and establish a continuous dialogue with First Nations communities on whose unseeded territories the university is located.
The Truth & Reconciliation Learning Circle (alumni book club) was designed by the Alumni Relations department to create an accessible space for CapU alumni to increase their knowledge of issues related to Truth and Reconciliation. Participants in the program were asked to read “Namwayut: A pathway to reconciliation” by Chief Robert Joseph and meet weekly (over the course of 7 weeks) to discuss assigned chapters from the book and discussion questions. Participants were asked to help the organizers create a safe space for learning, asking questions, and being a little uncomfortable. Weekly discussions were held virtually to accommodate CapU alumni located across all regions and lead by two facilitators who are well-respected Indigenous knowledge keepers.
All CapU alumni and staff were encouraged to join regardless of where they are in their personal journey. The author of the book was invited to attend the final session and provide a keynote address to participants. A CapU Alumni Linkedin group was utilized to continue conversations and connection outside of the weekly meetings. Following the program, participants were asked how they would "stay the course" and commit to one action to move reconciliation forward."
