Wider Horizons
From the Nominator
"Anchored by our 26-page "Never Enough Nature" special section, the spring 2022 issue of Wider Horizons was more than a year in the making and ended up being the most successful issue in the magazine's 16-year history—we printed extra copies and still ran out on campus and in the community.
Work on this issue started in the summer of 2021 when our team noticed that colleagues, students, and alumni were sharing stories and photos of finding joy in nature during the pandemic. We started brainstorming—what if we created a special issue dedicated to the beauty and bounty of Blackfoot territory? What if we shared the stunning photos that were filling up our cell phones and offered insider tips and insight into where to go, what to see, and where to eat? What if we could get students and employees across campus involved in storytelling and photography? Most importantly, what if we invited a Blackfoot scholar and knowledge keeper to share the Blackfoot stories of this land with us and with our readers?
It took almost a year to accomplish all those “what ifs,” but we did it. And the result is this special issue focused on six remarkable areas in southern Alberta. We also created additional content online at widerhorizons.ca and https://learn.lc/never-enough-nature, and our social media team turned the six areas into fantastic social media content that ran all summer long."
From the Judges
This truly felt like a special edition publication—from the unified design elements to the thoughtful and interesting nature-themed stories. We loved the stunning photography and the use of personal stories to highlight the world around them.
