AI at Oxford
From the Nominator
In 2023, conversations around artificial intelligence were reaching a peak. ChatGPT was less than a year old, and global leaders were getting ready to meet at Bletchley Park to discuss AI safety at the UK government's AI Safety Summit. Oxford’s public affairs team was tasked with developing a campaign to highlight the broad spectrum of the university’s AI research – including the science that is facilitating global advancement, practical applications in robotics and medicine, and its unique excellence around safety and regulation. The "AI at Oxford" campaign achieved this by positioning Oxford experts as leading voices in global AI challenges and opportunities, engaging with policymakers and global industry leaders, and leading conversations around AI. The campaign saw our researchers engaging with our audiences and policymakers and answering key AI questions being asked by the media and public. Three of our researchers attended the AI Summit, and a larger group engaged with government representatives beforehand. Our experts regularly provided media commentary, including live from the Summit, and despite major funding announcements by our competitors, we still led on share of voice during the campaign period. Our social media content gained over 11 million impressions and over 330,000 engagements, and our videos were seen more than 8 million times.
From the Judges
This campaign is noteworthy for its ability to showcase the university's continued leadership in this realm. Oxford capitalized on a great opportunity to enter this conversation and took such a comprehensive approach, targeting government, industry, the public, and media before, during, and after the summit. What's truly impressive are the magnitude and results. The key messages were strong and gave focus to disparate individual efforts and key outcomes. Many universities have a flagship program or discipline strength. This campaign is a great model for them.
