The Art of Communication
From the Nominator
During Black History Month, Xavier University unveiled a memorial bench designed to honor Black lives lost due to racial violence and oppression. The bench, believed to be the first of its kind on a major university campus, was designed and created in collaboration with local artist and alumna, Adoria Maxberry. Xavier’s Office of Marketing and Communications published a news story on the creation of the bench, which was unveiled during a university-wide Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Celebration. But the story did not end there. Adoria’s story is one of adversity, loss, and heartbreak – and also love and success. Sharing Adoria’s story added relevant context to the powerful symbol she helped create for Xavier. Through use of narrative voice and imagery, "The Art of Communication" successfully profiled Adoria Maxberry and capped off Xavier’s celebration of Black History Month. The story was shared on Facebook, Instagram, and X, generating engagement and positive responses. Adoria Maxberry is more than just an artist. She is a wife, mother, educator, and entrepreneur. Telling Adora’s story from multiple perspectives serves as a model for future profiles. Sometimes digging deeper below the surface can create a memorable story that captures the hearts and minds of readers.
