This video accompanies a UCSF Magazine story about Dr. Shawn Hervey-Jumper, an expert in the field of awake craniotomy and a pioneer in brain tumor research. Video storytelling is part of the magazine’s strategy to inform and inspire our audience and bolster the brand of the University of California, San Francisco. This video aims to deepen the understanding of Dr. Hervey-Jumper’s neurosurgical innovation and humanity. We sought to demystify the process of awake brain surgery. We recognized the idea of brain surgery might cause apprehension and anxiety, particularly for those facing such procedures, so we approached the topic with sensitivity. In the video, the patient is alert and engaged during parts of the procedure to prevent severe brain damage. She is given various language tasks, which provide a blueprint for Dr. Hervey-Jumper. He explains, "As I turn on and off each little spot along the surface of the brain, we're listening for errors. If they can name the picture, that means that that part can be removed." In addition to detailing the intricacies of the surgical process, the video highlights Dr. Hervey-Jumper's groundbreaking research, helping us understand "how neuronal activity drives cell growth and what we can do about it."
