Black Alumni Reunion Illustration
From the Nominator
In October 2023, alumni from all generations came together for the Brown University Black Alumni Reunion. Brown’s Office of Alumni Relations partnered with the Inman Page Black Alumni Council (IPC) to develop this special weekend of events that occurs every five years. New for this reunion, Advancement Communications worked in close collaboration with IPC leadership on the visual identity, establishing a design framework for future Black Alumni Reunions. This branding will be partnered with a unique illustration depicting the theme of each year’s reunion. We sought to have the main illustration represent a central theme of the 2023 program, Afrofuturism, and connect it to the Black community experience at Brown. Advancement Communications selected and hired an illustrator specializing in the Afrofuturistic style. This illustrator incorporated the university's color palette and important Brown visual elements, including campus landmarks and retiring faculty. The resulting visual was iconic, energetic, and vibrant and embodied the reunion themes of (Re)Claiming, (Re)Connecting, and (Re)Imagining rooted in Afrofuturism. The illustration also spotlighted people and places that played a significant role in the experience of Black students and alumni. Used within a range of communications, materials, and locations—including postcards, emails, social media posts, campus signage, speaking program backdrops, and even on the catered food—the visual created continuity across touchpoints and served as an anchor for the community as they experienced all the weekend had to offer.
