BU Today: My English Name Is...
From the Nominator
Many international students choose an English name when they come to school in America. Boston University wanted to explore why this is so common on our campus, so we asked a handful of students to talk about it in our studio. Their answers ranged from humorous to heartfelt, and they taught us a lot about what it means to assimilate into a different culture. What started with a question about a common, somewhat quirky practice, turned into a larger comment on the idea of belonging without losing your identity. This project was a special collaboration between the video producer and our senior international social media specialist, Carol Duan. Carol and her interns identified students who were interested in talking to us and provided invaluable context and advice. Carol’s involvement with the project made the students feel comfortable, and the trust she built with them encouraged honest, heartfelt answers. Students loved the video, and it had a huge response on our social channels. We received lots of comments about how much they enjoyed learning about their classmates, and many international students expressed gratitude that the issue was highlighted in such a respectful manner.
From the Judges
This was a thoughtful, uplifting, and one-of-a-kind video. It held fast to the needs and interests of its student audience. This video was light and playful, but it asked questions of international students that we rarely dare ask, doing so with immense respect and honesty. This video truly delivered in forging opportunities for greater connection across the student body.
