Faces of Cancer
From the Nominator
As Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) marked 50 years of transformative care for patients, the Duke Communications and Marketing Office produced The Many Faces of Cancer photography series to showcase inspirational patients. Given that cancer has the potential to impact anyone regardless of gender or age, our series demonstrates the different ways Duke patients are each navigating their own cancer experience. Whether viewing the portraits in person in the Duke Cancer Center lobby or experiencing them through Duke’s microsite or social channels, the photographs are meant to be a source of community, strength, and empowerment for fellow patients and families. Showing the perseverance of DCI patients, the photos also educate and inspire those who have not been directly impacted by cancer. The photos demonstrate that the patients are not letting the disease define who they are.
From the Judges
Strong storytelling for a moving subject, with a clear and well-executed concept. Lighting is nicely done, but not overdone. The use of the photographs as oversize prints hanging in the facility is perfect.
