"Happy Birthday, Larry" Campaign
From the Nominator
Larry J. Sabato, a beloved professor at the University of Virginia, founded the UVA Center for Politics in 1998. He is a best–selling author, has won four Emmys, and is recognized as one of the nation’s most respected political analysts, appearing regularly on national and international TV. Sabato is the author or editor of two dozen books on American politics. Sabato’s Crystal Ball newsletter has won numerous awards. Sabato has taught over 20,000 students in his career, and the University of Virginia has given him its highest honor, The Thomas Jefferson Award. In 2020–21, he celebrated his 50th year of association with UVA. In honor of his 70th birthday, University Annual Giving partnered with the Center for Politics on a digital fundraising campaign with a 1:1 matching gift. The campaign took advantage of the upcoming midterm election and leveraged his tremendous popularity among UVA alumni, center supporters, Crystal Ball newsletter subscribers, and devotees of American politics. Funds raised would be used to develop lesson plans, provide summer stipends, sponsor international students, and fund center programming. The campaign, launched less than a week after it was suggested, raised more than $83,000 in unrestricted funds for the Center for Politics from 268 donors from 33 states—146 donated via the email campaign (44% first-time donors) and 120 through social channel links and the campaign URL. New donors became prospects who can be solicited for additional gifts.
